Ritter 1981 Kakteen in Südamerika 4:1325

Trichocereus puquiensis Rauh & Backeberg.

(PACHANOI's differences are given in parenthesis)

Ribs 8-11, around 2 cm high.

Areoles are round, 5-8 mm diameter, set 15-25 mm apart.

Spines number around 12.

Around 10 are radial spines15-30 mm long and there are around 2 long Central spines (T. pachanoi spines are somewhat to much fewer)

(Ritter's comments below were based on 5 blossoms on different individuals of the holotype):

Flowers borne on the side, up to the top of the head (in T. pachanoi they are much more close to the top of the column),

Blossom 14-16 cm long, opening to 8-10 cm wide (T. pachanoi 19-23 cm long, opening to 20 cm wide)

Good smelling

[Form of the flowers lightly curved in the middle" (or "slightly bent into two segments of the same length").]

[Problem note: Unclear meaning on preceeding passage.

Original:

"Form der Blüten wie dort leicht doppelt gebogen"

freetranslation.com gave

"Form of the blossom as well as there easily doubles bent."]

Nectar chamber is 22-25 mm long (It is just about as long in pachanoi's much shorter blossom), ca 0,5 mm far around the Style, with nectar (just as).

Receptacle about that 55-58 mm long, above 2-25 mm far (80x45 mm).

Style is 8,5-10 cm long (pachanoi 19,5 cm long), with 17-20 (pachanoi 15) 15-20 mm (30 mm) long stigma lobes held between the anthers (In pachanoi they are held paramount to them).

Internal petals are white, 48-62 mm long (9-10 cm), 22-30 mm wide (35-40 mm), outer petals have only moderate points and curve outwardly only a little. (Pachanoi has petals with longer points and arching further outward)

[Problem note: Unclear meaning on ending of passage above.

Original:

"...die äusseren nur mässig zugespitzt und nur wening nach aussen gebogen (länger zugespitzt und weiter nach aussen gebogen)"]

freetranslation.com gave:

"bent the external only moderate trains tip and only wening outward (warehouse trains tip and further outward bent)."]

Endemic to Puquio, Department Ayacucho, Peru

No. FR 155b.

Fig. 1189 (in RITTER 1981).

The appearance and the blossom of the type indicates that Trichocereus puquiensis is closely related to Trichocereus pachanoi and also to T. cuzcoensis. As with the first, it grows on the Pacific side of the Andes, while T. cuzcoensis grows in the different climate of the Atlantic side.
